What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a type of thinking and learning style independent of intellectual abilities. It does not respond to the conventional evidenced based methods of teaching reading.

Dyslexia is a visual learning style that is resistant to phonics based reading.

Current research indicates:

30% of the population strongly uses visual (picture) thinking, 25% think verbally (words) and 45% uses both visual and verbal.

Dyslexics tend to be visual thinkers, however a few will be visual/verbal which means their visual learning style is resistant to phonics based reading strategies.

Dyslexic will have trouble learning sight words (Dolce words).

Words with pictures are easily understood and remembered by a dyslexic. Words with no pictures are difficult to remember in the early years of reading and this will impact on the child's comprehension as he/she progresses through school.
